I could use a support group on this topic for real! Apologies in advance for the ramble here. Over the last three years I have gained a massive amount of weight... I went from in the gym 5 days a week and running half-marathons to bring totally sedentary because if chronic back pain and sciatica that I had been treating with long term nerve pain meds as well as PT. I finally started losing strength and sensation in my bad leg and the MRI showed a very large herniation that was completely compressing a nerve and I just had surgery saturday.
So today before discharge my neurosurgeon came to talk to me about just how bad it was one he was in there. Because of the severity of the herniation and the multiple fragments he pulled out of my CSF plus my weight I'm at high risk for reoccurance. He was upfront with me about this before surgery and I planned on getting back in the swing as soon as the pain is give. The kicker is he also saw severe for my age arthritis in those facet joints. This makes it even more likely that I will need a fusion down the road which are super nasty in the low back. He told me today that running is completely out of the question... Forever...I lost the genetic lottery on spinal degeneration.
So now I don't know what to do with myself. He also said no plyometrics (so no Jillian Michaels or p90x), no Zumba, basically nothing with impact. Running was a big hobby in my life and a very social one and I spent a lot of the day in tears to the point that the OT asked if I wanted clergy. I'm hoping to find new fun ways to get fit. Walking bores me but I was going to sign up to walk shelter dogs once I'm off restrictions. I am an avid swimmer too so that's still on the table.
Tl;Dr My back is a mess, I got fatter, banned from impact, need to find new ways to exercise.
Also would anyone here be interested in making a Fitocracy group? It is fun to use with a group, you get badges and stuff for competing goals, but it might be redundant with the thread here
