VI'm going to put this here now so I don't have to do it later: If you're new to this thread, no need to go through it and do all of the prior tasks! The key will be to read this post to see just what the heck is up here, and then you can just jump to the current day and join in there. We'll loop around and redo these challenges as needed!
Short version: This is a home cleaning and maintenance thread for those who find this sort of thing ahem challenging! (Full disclosure: I'm starting this thread because I find this stuff challenging, and one of the biggest things that helps me stay focused on cleaning is having a place to report back to. Now that it's cooling down, I'm ready to start working on this stuff again after three months of letting everything slide. I'm not about to clean when it's 90 degrees or more in my apartment, so it needs more than a little help.)
Your main supply list is as follows:
Distiller white vinegar (big jug!)
Baking soda (big box)
There's a site, Tumblr, and app called Unfuck Your Habitat, and they have all sorts of challenges, motivational tips (of the "get off your ass and do it!" nature), and plans to attack and conquer, and the idea of this thread is that we're going to use their tips and framework to get ourselves on the path to OH WOW I CAN SEE MY FLOOR AND THE BACK OF THE CLOSET!
There will be small daily challenges (say, spend twenty minutes cleaning a bookcase) and larger weekly challenges (cleaning out your pantry). Daily challenges will be posted the prior evening, and weekly challenges will be posted on Sunday nights. Weeks will run Monday through Sunday to give most people two days in a row to work on the weekly task. We'll use the 20/10 method and the concept of a reset to get nightmare spots under control. We'll develop our own personalized daily and weekly checklists. For those who are willing to do so, we can even have before and after photos: Here's what my hell of a table looked like before, and here's what it looked like after a mere twenty minutes cleaning. We can get our places clean!
So to get started, the daily challenge for tomorrow will be twenty minutes on your messiest flat surface. For me, that's going to be my dining room table. Since we're starting most of the way through the week, there won't be a weekly cleaning challenge this week, but there's an assignment: Inventory your cleaning supplies. You might be surprised to find what you have -- and horrified to realize what you're missing. You don't need tons of expensive cleaning supplies, but there are a few basics -- like window cleaner -- that you will either need to buy or figure out an alternative for.
And finally, I'm using the UFYH site/app/Tumblr for a lot of this stuff. If there's something in particular you would like to have "assigned" to the group in order to kick your butt into gear, just post in this thread or PM me! I live in a two-bedroom apartment without a lot of stuff most houses have, so I simply won't think about, say, a mud room assignment because I have no clue what cleaning that sort of space entails.
So... Is anyone with me on this adventure?
